What Are Crawlspaces?

Crawlspaces are a very unique foundation type due to their limited area of height between the ground and the bottom of a house. This space is generally constructed with solid concrete or insulated wood panels for a home to sit on. Unfortunately due to their structure, absorbent materials (wood, insulation, and like materials) and confined location they are susceptible to moisture, mold and rot. If poorly constructed, a crawlspace can affect the comfort and air quality inside a home as well as its energy consumption.

Recommended precautions to take:

  • Seal the area to limit soil gasses, moisture, excess air and insects from entering your crawlspace
  • Install a wall liner to help prevent dust, dirt or moisture from building in your crawlspace
  • Utilize vapor barriers to help prevent dust, dirt or moisture from building up in your crawlspace
  • Use seam tape to prevent any unwanted minerals from entering your crawlspace
